The final chapters of the Lost Angel unveil unpredictable events.
First, Doug, who supposedly died during war, miraculously returns back. As much as he’s happy to reunite with his wife and daughter, he feels broken and useless due to his permanent back injury that deters him from protecting his country in the war like any other man and also denies him the ability to provide for his own family.
Ellen is in a transition between childhood and adulthood. She begins to get attracted to Mabel’s mischievous son, Billy. She soon loses hope when he doesn’t show her any signs of interest.
Gertie constantly proves herself to be Ellen’s family’s guardian angel. For due to the war and Doug’s inability to work, Ellen’s family is going through a hard time providing for its self, it’s becoming impoverished. Gertie decides to help them by selling her father’s house and starting her own business, a plant nursery. She offers Ellen, Hilda and Doug jobs and accommodation, but they’re reluctant to accept her preposition since they feel it’s an act of pity from Gertie. They are then obliged to accept her offer when they learn about Ellen’s pregnancy from Billy during her sixteenth birthday. The alternate choice to leaving the town, making Billy marry Ellen, is inapplicable since he’s already married to Sheila, who also got pregnant by Billy.
Billy’s angelic brother Percy married Ellen to protect her reputation on one condition which was not letting Billy know that Ellen’s baby was his (Billy’s).
